~Elizabeth’s 5 STAR REVIEW~
“He was kind, he was caring, and he was loving. And he was mine.”
Hard Corps is the 7th book in the Selected Sinners Series. Although character crossover exists throughout each book in the series, Hard Corps can be read as a stand alone.
“Men died. Damned good men. Truly believing any other option was possible, at least while in combat, was unrealistic.”
Hard Corps is a moving story of a marine and biker. Alec Jacob served his country faithfully for several tours of duty. Throughout his service, he endured both physical and emotional injuries. Despite the pain, his loyalty to his brothers is unwavering, and his desire to serve his country is his teleios “consummate human integrity and virtue”. Before you question my choice of Greek vocabulary, I must clarify that it is truly the only word that I can use to describe the character of this man!
“If we aren’t focused on living life to the best of our ability, we’re slowly dying a death that’s of our own choosing. The odd thing is we get to pick the course we take.”
When his final tour comes to an end, he returns home to Kansas. However, while he was serving his country, life continued to press on. Things at home were irrevocably changed and Alec “aka A-Train”, despite his best efforts, was unable to make things right. He mounts his bike and rides with his MC brothers to Austin, Texas. In the Lonestar State, he finds solace in the friendship of two local boxers and their family. Alec is quickly enveloped by a love he has never experienced before. In addition to his new friends, he is swept away by a blonde haired Texas Cutie named Katie.
“Watching her eat, drink, and even talk was fascinating to me, and as I sat and watched her think while she ate her crust, I tried desperately to determine why I was so interested in her.”
Katie and Alec share a unique bond. Both are tentative and careful as they maneuver closer together. Their love is one of endurance and tenderness. Alec and Katie’s relationship is like a pendulum swinging between utter passion and purity. Both are sensitive to the needs of the other, and they take their time making a future together.
“I don’t want this to end,” she said. I shook my head. “It won’t.”
Told in Alec’s POV, Hard Corps is a truly unique read full of heart. This is a story cataloging the life of a soldier. It captures snapshots of moments of joy, pain, growth, happiness, sorrow, and everything in between. The dialogue is natural in every single moment of the text, and the character relationships are critical throughout the development of the plot. Alec is quite complex, and his growth throughout is what kept me engaged the entire read. The underlying theme of Brotherhood is the driving force in the Selected Sinners Series. These men exude honor, respect, and loyalty. They are all unique, and A-Train is just another intricate piece of the puzzle. Hard Corps is written in a naturalistic style that is steady paced and traces over deeply felt emotional subject matter. I applaud Mr. Hildreth for exploring the life of a veteran and displaying the benefits reaped by living an honorable life. I found several personal connections to the characters and situations inHard Corps which made this read even more sentimental for me. The heavy subject matter paired with the light and funny moments made this a story that I will not forget.
“I was no longer at war, and I was no longer in charge of protecting Marines. My solemn duty, at least at the moment, was to protect the people gathered in the waiting room.”
“One special moment at a time.”
Overall, I highly recommend Hard Corps to any reader that appreciates the men and women who have bled to protect our country. If you want to be forever changed, read Hard Corps. If you want to be thankful for the blessings in your life, read Hard Corps. If you need to be reminded that although life sometimes doesn’t go the way we planned it goes the way it was meant to go (and everything will be ok), read Hard Corps. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this read, and I certainly look forward to more from this author. Bravo Mr. Hildreth! Bravo!
